About us

The Institute for Radio Astronomy (INRAS) of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) is an academic unit which has as its main objective the research and promotion of radio astronomy, Astrophysics, Radio science, Space Science and Engineering, as well as promoting multidisciplinary activities in those areas within the university and undertaking engineering projects linked to Space Science and Applications.

Objectives of the Institute

  • To develop and foster all type of activities which will promote high-level thinking and doing about outer space phenomena, near-Earth space and Earth’s atmosphere to deep space, including Radio astronomy, Astrophysics and research, development and construction, use and applications linked to satellites and space probes. All this will happen within a multidisciplinary focus.
  • Encourage academic activities by having courses, seminars, visit of professors and researchers from universities within Peru and abroad, as well as from Research institutes linked to the aims and activities of the institute.
  • Foster the exchange and strengthening of links between the university and local or foreign research centres or similar institutes, withing the global frame of the country or regional development.
  • To develop a centre of excellence with increasing visibility, both national and international. It should be permanently linked to state-of-the-art advances in science and technology, focusing on possible applications for the needs of the country.

Activities

In order to comply with its objectives, the institute has the the following activities planned:

  • Basic and applied research to be carried out by inter and multidisciplinary teams within the PUCP and/or in collaboration with national or International entities.
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the radioscience, radioastronomy, space science and exploration.
  • Popularization of astronomy, astrophysics and space science and exploration through conferences, hosting visits and through the media for the benefit of the general public.
  • Scientific and technical interchange with similar institutions both locally and internationally, participation in conferences and projects.
  • Manage a centralized information and documentation centre.
  • All other activities connected to the Institute’s objectives.
